The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has sharply criticized the continued silence of many Igbo political leaders following the recent life imprisonment sentence handed down to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by Justice Omotosho.
In a press release dated December 1, 2025, the council described the verdict as unjust and deeply troubling, citing what it called “overwhelming evidence of procedural irregularities and unsubstantiated allegations” surrounding the case.
The organization noted that despite widespread international condemnation of the ruling, only the two federal lawmakers representing Kanu’s constituency, a Senator and a member of the House of Representatives have publicly spoken against the judgment.
UNIEC said the silence of other Igbo political leaders has fueled public suspicion of complicity in Kanu’s prolonged detention and in the broader injustices faced by the Igbo population in Nigeria.
The council urged any political leader who has not directly benefited from these injustices to “immediately and courageously” join the call for justice.
Reaffirming its stance, UNIEC emphasized that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal, noting that he has been cleared by courts in Nigeria and Kenya, as well as by the United Nations.
According to the council, Kanu remains innocent under all internationally recognized legal and moral frameworks.
The group reiterated its demand for his immediate and unconditional release, along with full compensation and rehabilitation.
It also warned against any potential danger linked to his reported transfer to Sokoto, insisting that no further harm must befall him.
UNIEC expressed gratitude to millions of Nigerians and global supporters who continue to advocate for Kanu’s freedom.
The council stated that Kanu’s suffering symbolizes the wider struggles of the Igbo and other marginalized communities in the country.
The statement was signed by the UNIEC Director-General, Alpha Ikpeama, and the Director of Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe.
