The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, has warned youths against arson and bush burning as the harmattan season approaches.
The warning was issued by the State Chairman, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, during a media briefing yesterday at the NYCN Annex Office, Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
Ochishi said arson is a criminal offence and that anyone caught setting fire to bushes, farmland, or property would face prosecution.
He noted that harmattan fires spread unpredictably and could cause significant damage to lives, property, and the environment.
He urged youths to support government policies and programmes of Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, emphasizing alignment with the People’s Charter of Needs and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on NYCN’s 2026 plans, Ochishi said the council will implement programmes including agriculture roundtables, security dialogues, quarterly zonal and state meetings, the 2026 International Youth Week, youth and student outreach initiatives, and business roundtable engagements.
Ochishi also commended the Ebonyi State Government under Governor Nwifuru for projects in rural road construction, water reticulation, youth empowerment, sports development, scholarship schemes, pension and gratuity payments, peacebuilding efforts, and the ongoing tunnel bridge at Vanco and Enyim Agbaja linking Benue State.
He called on youths and residents to avoid violence and media calumny, stressing the need for peace and unity in the state.
