Stakeholders in Ohaukwu South State Constituency of Ebonyi State have endorsed Hon. Ejike James Agbo as their consensus candidate for the State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement, which drew support from party members, community leaders and other critical stakeholders, yesterday at Ohaukwu Development Center Headquarters was anchored on calls for equity, fairness and justice, particularly regarding zoning arrangements within the constituency.
Advocates of the move argued that with the incumbent lawmaker and Deputy Speaker, Hon. Chinedu Onah, set to complete two terms in office, the principle of rotational representation supports a shift of the seat to Ezzamgbo Ward.
The motion adopting Agbo was moved by Mrs. Ukpabi Janeth, who described him as a grassroots mobiliser with a record of people-oriented leadership.
She cited his tenure as Coordinator of Ohaukwu Development Centre as evidence of his impact on human capital development and community growth.
Mrs. Hellen Nwokwu, a management committee member and former APC Woman Leader, seconded the motion, stating that the endorsement was based on Agbo’s leadership credentials rather than partisan considerations. She added that the demand for Ezzamgbo to produce the next lawmaker aligns with established norms of political balancing in the constituency.
Mr. John Ikechukwu Ugadu of Umuogudo Akpu said that while Onah’s tenure had been impactful, the need for equitable representation made a transition necessary.
He warned that disregarding zoning expectations could destabilise the constituency’s political consensus.
Also speaking, the APC Chairman of Ezzamgbo Ward, Mr. James Ogwa, described the ward as a significant political bloc with a history of contributions to the state’s leadership.
He cautioned against marginalisation, noting that ignoring the people’s position could affect party unity and electoral prospects.
Other stakeholders, including Janeth Ituma and Ukpabi Frank, called for increased participation in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, stressing that voter mobilisation would be key to translating the endorsement into electoral success.
Agbo’s supporters highlighted his record as Coordinator of Ohaukwu Development Centre, pointing to initiatives in youth empowerment, including skill acquisition programmes and startup support for small businesses. They also cited his interventions in education, such as scholarships and financial assistance for students, as well as healthcare support for vulnerable residents.
Responding, Agbo thanked constituents for the confidence reposed in him but noted that decisions on zoning remain within the purview of party stakeholders and ongoing consultations.
He urged supporters to remain peaceful and engaged as the political process unfolds.
He also commended Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, for maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Political observers say the endorsement signals shifting dynamics in Ohaukwu South, where zoning considerations, grassroots support and performance records are expected to shape the contest for the 2027 elections.
