President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated measures aimed at easing the growing transportation burden on Nigerians following persistent increases in fuel prices, a development that has significantly impacted the cost of living across the country.
The move, disclosed by Umar Namadi during his Eid-el-Fitr address in Dutse, underscores the Federal Government’s awareness of the economic strain faced by citizens.
According to the governor, the President is deeply concerned about the ripple effects of rising fuel costs, particularly on transportation fares, food prices, and essential services.
Namadi explained that the surge in fuel prices is partly driven by global factors, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted energy markets and pushed up costs internationally. He noted that these external pressures have compounded domestic economic challenges, making urgent intervention necessary.
In response, the Federal Government is prioritising policies designed to make transportation more affordable. These include potential subsidies, support for mass transit systems, and other targeted interventions aimed at reducing the cost of mobility for millions of Nigerians who rely on road transport daily.
The Jigawa State Government, Namadi added, is set to align with the federal initiative by rolling out complementary programmes to cushion the effects of the fuel hike on residents. He expressed optimism that coordinated efforts between federal and state authorities would gradually stabilise transport costs and improve living conditions.
The announcement comes amid growing public concern over the rising cost of petrol and its widespread impact on household expenses.
While the situation remains challenging, government officials maintain that ongoing reforms and interventions will, over time, bring relief to Nigerians and restore some measure of economic stability.
