At least three persons have been confirmed dead following a tragic motor accident on the notorious Onyeama Hills stretch of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway on Saturday morning.
The crash involved multiple vehicles, including a black Toyota Sienna bus carrying journalists on an official assignment to Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. Several occupants of the bus sustained injuries of varying degrees, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Among those injured are NTA reporter and Chairman of the NTA Chapel, Chimaroke Ugwu, his cameraman Gerald Ugwuanyi, as well as AIT reporter and Secretary of the Private Broadcast Chapel, Kelechi Ekeledo, and his cameraman Ifeanyi Ogbodo.
Their conditions are being closely monitored by medical personnel at nearby hospitals.
Sources said the identities of the deceased were yet to be confirmed at the time of filing this report. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force were on the scene, carrying out rescue operations and clearing the wreckage.
The Onyeama Hills area has long been regarded as a high-risk zone due to its steep terrain and history of frequent accidents. Safety advocates have repeatedly called for urgent interventions to prevent further tragedies.
Reacting to the incident, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu Council, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, expressed relief that no journalist lost their life while extending sympathy to those affected. He also urged the speedy completion of ongoing road reconstruction work along the Ugwu Onyeama axis.
Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the crash, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
