The Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged Nigerians to remain patient and resilient as worsening economic conditions continue to impact livelihoods across the country, attributing the hardship to a growing global crisis triggered by ongoing geopolitical tensions.
In an Easter statement jointly signed by the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the National Spokesman, Chief Thompson Ohia, the group extended goodwill to Christians nationwide, particularly Igbos, while acknowledging the severe strain placed on citizens by the recent spike in petroleum prices.
Ohanaeze noted that the surge in fuel costs linked to the ongoing military confrontation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has compounded Nigeria’s economic challenges, pushing many families into deeper financial distress.
The organization emphasized that the ripple effects of the international conflict have disrupted global markets, with Nigeria feeling the consequences through increased transportation costs, inflation, and reduced purchasing power among citizens.
While calling for calm, Ohanaeze urged Nigerians not to lose hope, stressing that resilience and unity remain critical during this period of uncertainty. The group encouraged citizens to support one another and maintain faith in the country’s ability to overcome the prevailing difficulties.
Beyond the economic concerns, the organization also condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attack on innocent Christian worshippers during Palm Sunday as barbaric and unacceptable.
It called on the Federal Government to go beyond expressions of sympathy and take decisive steps to address the rising wave of insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Ohanaeze expressed confidence in the nation’s security leadership, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, urging them to intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in troubled regions.
The group also weighed in on the ongoing political tensions involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). It advised political actors to seek redress through legal channels, particularly the courts, rather than resorting to foreign intervention.
Ohanaeze warned that the combination of internal political disputes and security challenges could attract unnecessary international attention, including from Donald J. Trump, especially at a time when global tensions are already high.
Reaffirming its support for the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the organization called on Nigerians especially those traveling during the Easter season to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and hopeful for a better future.
