A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what he described as the administration’s failure to address Nigeria’s worsening electricity crisis.
In a press release issued on Monday, Eze criticized the President for allegedly failing to deliver on his campaign promise to fix the country’s power sector, stating that the current reality across Nigeria reflects “darkness, hardship, and policy failure.”
According to Eze, President Tinubu had, during the 2023 general elections, assured Nigerians that his administration would implement reforms capable of improving electricity supply. However, he argued that nearly three years into the administration, the situation has deteriorated.
“Today, what we see across the country is total and horrifying darkness. The power sector has continued to struggle, with persistent grid instability and no clear solution in sight,” Eze said.
He faulted recent remarks attributed to the President, in which past administrations were blamed for structural deficiencies in the power sector, describing such claims as an attempt to deflect responsibility.
“Resorting to blaming previous governments is not only unhelpful but also an admission of failure. Leadership demands responsibility, not excuses,” he added.
Eze further alleged that despite significant budgetary allocations to the sector in recent years, there has been little measurable progress.
He also raised concerns about the impact of the situation on electricity workers, noting that public frustration has increasingly been directed at frontline staff.
“The lives and safety of electricity workers are being put at risk due to growing public anger over poor power supply,” he said.
While acknowledging longstanding structural challenges in Nigeria’s electricity industry, Eze maintained that the President had explicitly promised solutions rather than explanations.
“He asked Nigerians to hold him accountable if he failed to improve electricity supply. By his own standard, he has fallen short,” Eze stated.
The ADC chieftain therefore urged the President to either take decisive corrective action or step aside in the interest of national progress.
Eze also called on the Federal Government to provide a clear roadmap for stabilizing the power sector, restoring public confidence, and addressing the economic consequences of unreliable electricity supply.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Presidency regarding the claims.
