A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Goodluck Chidiebere Egwu, on Thursday urged Nigerians to align with the Party, describing it as a “moving train” despite the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Egwu, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, made the call while addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the Abakaliki capital, following the apex court’s ruling, which nullified a purported national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 by some aggrieved members of the Party.
The Supreme Court, in a split 3–2 decision, upheld earlier judgments voiding the convention on the grounds that it violated a subsisting court order and contravened provisions of the party’s constitution.
Reacting, Egwu said the issues leading to the judgment were wrongly interpreted in some quarters as an intra-party matter, insisting that the case fundamentally concerned constitutional compliance and respect for judicial authority.
“It was mistakenly described as an inter-party affair. It has never been so. The issue was about adherence to our party constitution and obedience to court orders,” he said.
According to him, no political party can operate outside its constitutional framework and expect legitimacy, stressing that disregard for court rulings undermines democratic order.
“You cannot disobey the judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction and expect a favourable outcome. That is not tenable in any democratic system,” Egwu added.
The PDP chieftain, however, said the party remains undeterred by the verdict, maintaining that it is still Nigeria’s strongest opposition platform capable of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He called on party members and other Nigerians to close ranks and work towards strengthening the PDP ahead of future political contests.
“We use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to come and join the moving train. The PDP remains the strongest opposition party and is determined to take over from the APC,” he said.
