The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has strongly condemned the killing of the traditional ruler of Isinkwo Community in Onicha Local Government Area, Eze Josephat Ikegwu, describing the act as barbaric and a grave assault on the peace and unity of the state.
In a press statement issued on April 2, 2026, the Governor expressed deep grief over the gruesome murder of the monarch, noting that the incident has sent shockwaves across Ebonyi and beyond.
“It is with a heart weighed down by grief and deep anguish that I condemn the gruesome and senseless murder of His Royal Highness, Ezeogo Josephat Ikegwu of Ishinkwo Community,” the Governor said.
He described the killing as not only an attack on a revered traditional institution but also a direct affront to the collective conscience of the people of Ebonyi State.
Governor Nwifuru immediately directed the state’s joint security architecture to launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing, with a mandate to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.
He assured residents that security agencies have been fully mobilized and are working round the clock to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“No individual or group, no matter how highly placed or connected, will be spared if found culpable,” he declared, emphasizing that the sanctity of human life remains non-negotiable under his administration.
The Governor also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late monarch, the people of Ishinkwo Community, and the entire Onicha Local Government Area, urging them to remain calm as the government intensifies efforts to ensure justice is served.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity across the state, noting that decisive and strategic measures have already been put in place to address recurring violence and restore lasting peace.
“As a government guided by the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda, we are resolute in our commitment to entrench peace, security, and social order as the bedrock of sustainable development. Without peace, there can be no progress, and without security, there can be no future,” he stated.
Governor Nwifuru called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and security agencies to set aside differences and collaborate in safeguarding peace and stability across all communities in Ebonyi State.
