The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Southeast Engagement, Barr. Chioma Nweze, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing him as a defender of the Christian faith who lived a fulfilled and impactful life.
In a condolence message issued on Monday in Abakaliki, Barr. Nweze said she was deeply saddened upon receiving news of the Bishop’s passing, noting that his death marks the loss of a spiritual leader, moral compass, and father figure to the Catholic faithful and the wider Christian community.
She described the late Bishop as a devoted servant of God whose life exemplified unwavering faith, humility, and dedication to the growth of the Church. According to her, Bishop Chukwu committed his entire life to the service of God and humanity, working tirelessly to spread the gospel and uplift the lives of his people.
“Bishop Chukwu was a man of deep conviction and faith, whose commitment to the Lord’s vineyard distinguished him as a true messenger of God Almighty,” she said.
Barr. Nweze further noted that the late cleric would be remembered for his vision, discipline, and uncommon patriotism, adding that he laid a solid spiritual and socio-religious foundation for the Catholic faithful in Abakaliki Diocese and beyond.
Reflecting on his tenure, she stated that upon his ordination as Bishop, he took on the historic responsibility of providing direction, hope, and administrative leadership to the Church, guiding it through periods of growth and expansion.
“With courage, foresight, and selflessness, he nurtured the dream of spreading the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to the hinterlands, touching countless lives in the process,” she added.
The presidential aide also praised Bishop Chukwu’s humility in leadership, commitment to public service, and passion for national unity, describing these qualities as enduring legacies that will continue to inspire generations.
She emphasized that the story of the Catholic Church’s progress in the region cannot be told without acknowledging the sacrifices and statesmanship of the late Bishop.
“We are going to miss him dearly. The relationship he shared with people from all walks of life has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” she said.
Barr. Nweze extended her heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the people of Ebonyi State, and all those affected by the loss, praying for the peaceful repose of the Bishop’s soul.
