The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi yesterday secured overwhelming support from stakeholders and party faithful during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election held in Mbeke Ward, Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The exercise, conducted at Isophumini Primary School, witnessed a massive turnout of APC members and supporters who endorsed the senator for another term in office, citing his legislative contributions and developmental projects across the district.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, Senator Nwebonyi expressed appreciation to the leadership of the APC, his ward and constituents for what he described as a renewed mandate to continue effective representation at the National Assembly.
The lawmaker said his stewardship since 2023 had been driven by people-oriented policies, legislative interventions and infrastructural development targeted at improving the living conditions of residents of Ebonyi North Senatorial District.
According to him, his representation had attracted road infrastructure, educational interventions, empowerment programmes and scholarship opportunities for indigent students within the zone.
“We have facilitated the construction and renovation of schools, completed several road projects and engaged over 700 indigent students through scholarship schemes.
“Just a few months ago, I produced 15 medical doctors and over 35 lawyers through my scholarship foundation. By next year, another batch of students will be sent to the United Kingdom to further their studies in Medicine and Surgery,” he said.
Nwebonyi disclosed that over 30 kilometres of roads were currently ongoing across communities in the district, with several already receiving concrete pavement.
The senator assured constituents that his second term would witness expanded developmental projects, particularly in road construction, educational support and agricultural empowerment.
“If my people have seen 30 kilometres of road in my first term, they will see double of that in my second term. If I have trained 700 students, they should expect more than double in the coming years,” he added.
The senator further commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for what he described as unprecedented infrastructural transformation in Ebonyi State, especially in the area of road construction and rural development.
He equally lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting infrastructure development in the South-East region, particularly the ongoing road project linking Ebonyi State through Benue and Nasarawa States to Abuja.
According to him, the project would significantly ease transportation and boost economic activities across the region upon completion.
On the conduct of the APC primary election, Nwebonyi attributed the peaceful and orderly process to the leadership disposition of Governor Nwifuru, noting that the party had earlier resolved internal disagreements through consultations and grassroots engagements.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Senate Electoral Committee for the primary election in Mbeke Ward, Mr Emmanuel Ophoke, announced Senator Nwebonyi as winner of the exercise after polling 882 votes at his ward.
Declaring the result at the ward collation centre, Ophoke said the exercise was conducted peacefully and in compliance with the guidelines of the APC.
Also speaking, former Minister and APC chieftain, Chief Godwin Ogbaga, described Senator Nwebonyi’s performance in office as impressive and impactful.
Ogbaga noted that the senator had sponsored several people-oriented bills and facilitated strategic projects, including the recently approved Federal Medical Centre for the zone.
“There is something he forgot to mention, the Federal Medical Centre recently approved for the zone. This is among the numerous bills and projects he has attracted to the people. His performance is already speaking for him,” Ogbaga stated.
He expressed confidence that the senator’s second term would surpass his current achievements, stressing that Nwebonyi had already demonstrated capacity and commitment to service delivery.
In a related development, pioneer Coordinator of Mbeke Development Centre, Chief Godwin Nwode, said Senator Nwebonyi’s intervention in road construction had transformed several previously inaccessible rural communities within the area.
Nwode, who disclosed that he recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, attributed his decision to the developmental strides of Governor Nwifuru and Senator Nwebonyi.
According to him, the ongoing collaboration between the state government and the senator in road infrastructure development had improved accessibility and economic activities in many communities.
Similarly, member one of the Ebonyi State Secondary Education Board, Chief Lazarus Eze, described the primary election as peaceful, transparent and successful.
Eze said the senator’s achievements in health, education and empowerment accounted for the massive support he received from party members and constituents during the exercise.
