The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following security intelligence indicating a possible kidnap attack targeting students.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The directive was issued in a circular dated June 9, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamere.
According to the circular, the decision was based on credible security reports from relevant agencies warning of imminent threats to the safety of students, teachers, and surrounding school communities.
“The Ministry of Education has received intelligence reports and advisories from relevant security agencies regarding credible threats to the safety of students, staff, and school communities in some parts of the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area,” the circular stated.
It added that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended indefinitely as a precautionary measure.
Security sources disclosed that the alert followed intelligence from the Department of State Services (DSS), which reportedly uncovered plans by suspected bandits to carry out mass abductions in parts of Edo North Senatorial District.
The report allegedly indicated that the suspects had shifted attention to schoolchildren after earlier failed attempts to kidnap high-profile individuals for ransom.
It was further gathered that a 25-year-old suspect was arrested on June 4 while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School, raising fears that preparations for an attack may have already been underway.
In response, security agencies have reportedly recommended heightened protection around schools, increased deployment of personnel, and stronger collaboration with local vigilante groups and community hunters to forestall any attack.
Despite the closure, the government said candidates currently writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be allowed to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements.
“Candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision as may be provided by the relevant security agencies and community stakeholders,” the statement added.
The government directed school authorities to ensure the orderly release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities, and maintain close communication with security agencies.
It also urged residents and parents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives as efforts continue to neutralize the threat and restore normal academic activities across the affected communities in Edo State.
