The Abia State government under the watch of Governor Alex Otti has organised a two-day strategic media retreat in Abuja for its spokespersons as part of efforts to strengthen government communication, promote ethical journalism and prepare media professionals for effective information management ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the end of the retreat, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the capacity-building programme was designed to equip government spokespersons with the skills required to navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape while enhancing their effectiveness in communicating government policies and programmes.
Kanu explained that the retreat underscored the state government's commitment to building a professional and responsive information management system capable of addressing emerging communication challenges.
He expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the programme, noting that participants had acquired valuable knowledge that would improve their performance and strengthen public engagement.
According to him, the government has concluded plans to organise more retreats and capacity-building programmes for its spokespersons, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
"The media remain the critical link between government and the people. It is therefore imperative that media practitioners remain proactive before, during and after elections to ensure the timely dissemination of accurate information and prevent the spread of fake news capable of triggering unnecessary tension," Kanu said.
He stressed that objective, balanced and factual reporting would play a vital role in sustaining peace and deepening Nigeria's democratic process during the election period.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, described the retreat as insightful and impactful, saying it had exposed participants to modern communication strategies and enhanced their capacity to engage the public more effectively.
Ekeoma said the knowledge gained would improve information management within government and called for the expansion of the initiative to include more media practitioners across Abia State.
According to him, broadening participation would further strengthen professionalism and promote responsible journalism in the state.
In his presentation, the lead facilitator, Mr. Monday Ashibuogwu, said the retreat was organised to prepare government media aides for the changing dynamics of the communication industry.
He urged participants to embrace innovation while adhering strictly to the ethics of public relations and communication practice in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Ashibuogwu emphasised that professionalism, credibility and ethical conduct remain indispensable in building public trust and ensuring effective communication.
The retreat, organised by Channelkoos Media Consult Ltd, attracted nine participants from Abia State, including the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Sir Chris Onwuegbu; the General Manager of Abia Newspapers, Mr. Jones Nnanna Ike; and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, among other senior government communication officials.
