---Says his doctorate remains a testament to Governor Nwifuru’s investment in human capital
The National Coordinator of the FON Scholars in Ebonyi State, Dr Nwodom Stan Nwodom, has described his recent attainment of a Doctor of Philosophy degree as a testament to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s investment in education and human capital development.
Nwodom, who spoke exactly one week after becoming a PhD holder, said the Ebonyi State scholarship programme initiated under the administration of Governor Nwifuru had created opportunities for hundreds of young people to pursue postgraduate studies within and outside Nigeria.
He said the governor's commitment to education had gone beyond the provision of financial assistance to students, stressing that the intervention had restored hope to families and given many Ebonyians an opportunity to pursue academic and professional aspirations that could otherwise have remained unattainable.
Reflecting on his academic journey, the FON Scholars coordinator said he was filled with gratitude for the opportunity and support provided through the state government's scholarship intervention.
"Exactly one week ago, I became a PhD holder. Today, beyond the celebration, I find myself reflecting deeply on the journey and the opportunity that made it possible," Nwodom said.
"One question keeps echoing in my heart: where would I be today if His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, had not emerged as Governor in 2023 and made education a priority?
"The answer is humbling."
According to him, about 700 Ebonyi indigenes had received support to undertake Postgraduate Diploma, Master's and PhD programmes in universities across Nigeria, while another 300 beneficiaries had secured opportunities for overseas studies through the scholarship programme.
"For many, these are numbers. For us, they are lives, they are families, and they are dreams that refused to die," he said.
Nwodom said that as the National Coordinator of FON Scholars in Ebonyi State, he had witnessed firsthand the impact of the scholarship scheme on beneficiaries and their families.
He said the programme had become a major vehicle for social mobility and human capital development, enabling young people to acquire advanced knowledge and skills for the development of the state and the country.
"As the National Coordinator of FON Scholars, Ebonyi State, I have witnessed the joy on students' faces, heard countless testimonies and seen firsthand how this intervention has transformed lives and restored hope," he stated.
Addressing the governor, Nwodom said the beneficiaries regarded the scholarship initiative as more than a financial intervention, describing it as an investment in the future of Ebonyi youths.
"Your Excellency, you did not merely give us scholarships; you gave us a chance to dream again. You gave families relief, young people hope, and scholars a platform to become who they were created to be," he said.
The PhD holder noted that his academic accomplishment was not merely a personal milestone but also a reflection of what deliberate leadership and sustained investment in human capital could achieve.
"Today, my PhD is not just a personal achievement. It is also a testimony of what purposeful leadership and investment in human capital can accomplish," Nwodom said.
He commended Governor Nwifuru for placing education among the key priorities of his administration, maintaining that the governor's approach to governance had demonstrated an understanding of the strategic role of education in sustainable development.
Nwodom expressed confidence that the beneficiaries of the scholarship programme would, in turn, deploy the knowledge and expertise acquired through their studies towards the advancement of Ebonyi State and society at large.
He added that the impact of the scholarship scheme would extend beyond the immediate beneficiaries, with families, communities and future generations expected to benefit from the human capital being developed.
"I am deeply grateful. Thank you, Your Excellency, for believing in Ebonyi youths. Thank you for investing in our dreams. Thank you for making education a pathway to a better future," he said.
Nwodom prayed for the continued success of the scholarship programme and the multiplication of its impact across the state.
"May the lives touched by this scholarship continue to multiply, and may its impact be felt for generations to come," he added.
For Nwodom, one week after attaining the pinnacle of academic qualification, the celebration, he said, has given way to deeper reflection and what he described as a lifetime of gratitude for an opportunity that helped turn an academic dream into reality.
