Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has explained why he refused to take a shot at the Nigerian Senate despite the pressure coming to him ahead of the 2023 general elections.
In a media chat, the governor said his refusal to contest the senatorial position was because he had zoned the senatorial ticket to Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
"I have already committed that this Senate ticket should be zoned to Etche, an area that has never had it before, Wike explained, saying, unlike some 2023 presidential hopefuls who obtained both presidential and senatorial forms, he elected against it because he was serious about his bid to become Nigeria’s leader.
He added: “First of all, this is how you know those who are prepared to run an election. Some of them collected presidential forms and at the same time collected senatorial forms. You’ll know that those people are not serious to run.
“I never collected senatorial form. Even after the whole thing, people said come and go for Senate, I said no. I won’t do that.
“I’ve already committed that this Senate ticket should be zoned to this area (Etche) because they’ve never had it before. I must not be in power,” Wike said - Politics Today.
