The apex Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has formally declared the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, as the foremost political leader of the Southeast, praising his record in infrastructure, economic transformation, and democratic governance.
In a statement jointly signed by its Deputy President General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Thompson Ohia, the group said its internal review of leadership contributions placed Umahi “far above his peers” in terms of visible achievements and impact on the lives of the people.
“Senator Dave Umahi’s leadership distinguishes itself above all others, particularly when measured in terms of economic empowerment, infrastructural development and fidelity to democratic values,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze highlighted Umahi’s tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State, where he introduced far-reaching reforms in fiscal management, rural industrialization, and social infrastructure.
His administration invested in expansive road networks, modern hospitals, educational institutions, and agricultural value chains that positioned Ebonyi as one of the fastest-growing states in the region.
At the national level, Umahi’s stewardship of the Ministry of Works has been described as “revolutionary.” Ohanaeze credited him with securing the modernization of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, upgrading it to full international status, and championing the establishment of a second international airport in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Both projects, the group noted, have opened fresh economic and trade corridors for the Southeast.
The group also pointed to the ongoing federal road construction and rehabilitation projects across the region as proof of Umahi’s determination to correct decades of infrastructural neglect and ensure integration of the Southeast into the wider national economy.
Beyond bricks and mortar, Ohanaeze lauded Umahi for what it called his “democratic temperament” — his style of engaging federal authorities while carrying along traditional institutions, community leaders, and grassroots stakeholders.
This, the group said, has given the Southeast a credible and respected voice in national decision-making.
Consequently, Ohanaeze announced that Umahi has been formally adopted as Igbo National Political Leader, entrusted with the mandate of articulating and protecting the region’s collective interests, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement, however, has not gone without criticism. Supporters of former Anambra Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, argue that his 2023 presidential bid did more than any single effort in recent memory to galvanize national attention on Igbo aspirations, pointing to his clean governance record as evidence of enduring influence.
Similarly, backers of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, contend that his position as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum has placed him in a unique position to negotiate for the Southeast within the ruling party.
Analysts suggest that the declaration may deepen debates about who truly represents the political soul of the Southeast, but also reflects the vibrancy of Igbo politics as 2027 approaches.
Despite the divergent views, Ohanaeze insists its decision stands, describing Umahi as the Southeast’s best hope for infrastructural renaissance, economic growth, and democratic participation.
“As President Tinubu approaches his mid-term mark, we affirm that Senator Umahi embodies the qualities the Southeast needs to advance its economic growth, infrastructural renewal, and democratic participation in Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
