The Coordinator of Ohaukwu Development Centre, Hon. Ejike James Agbo, has lauded Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s agricultural initiative, describing the ongoing palm tree planting campaign as a lifeline for food security, economic growth, and environmental protection in Ebonyi State.
Speaking to journalists during the tree planting exercise at his centre, Agbo said the governor’s directive to all 64 development centre coordinators to embark on palm cultivation was a strategic move to sustain livelihoods and restore the agricultural heritage of the South East.
“Today, we are implementing the governor’s vision on palm tree planting. This shows that every responsible government has a cardinal agenda for its people—ensuring security, well-being, and sustainable growth. With over 150 palm seedlings provided per centre, we are determined to make it a 100 percent success,” Agbo said.
He added that the initiative not only addresses food security but also combats climate change, enhances environmental beauty, and creates economic opportunities for rural dwellers.
Tracing the importance of palm cultivation to the days of the late Dr. Michael Okpara, former Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Agbo noted that the governor was reviving a legacy that once made the region an agricultural powerhouse in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Palm tree planting is both economic and environmental. It was the pride of Eastern Nigeria under Michael Okpara, and Governor Nwifuru, being a student of history, has discovered its relevance and chosen to sustain it for our people,” he said.
Highlighting progress in Ohaukwu Development Centre under the current administration, Agbo pointed to the construction of a new secretariat, provision of boreholes, improved healthcare facilities, human empowerment schemes, and bursary support for students.
He praised the governor’s leadership, stressing that his projects and programs are tangible.
“It is only a wicked man who will say Governor Nwifuru has not done anything. His achievements speak for themselves across the state,” Agbo declared.
