The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has ordered security agencies to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the abduction and killing of the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community, Eze Francis Igwe, father of the immediate past Deputy Governor of the state, Kelechi Igwe.
The monarch was reportedly abducted by gunmen on Sunday while on his way to church in the Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state.
Governor Nwifuru gave the directive on Friday during a condolence visit to the palace of the late royal father in Ndufu-Alike, where he sympathised with the bereaved family and members of the community.
The governor, who cancelled the scheduled State Executive Council meeting, led members of the council and top government officials to the monarch’s palace to commiserate with the family over the tragic incident.
Nwifuru disclosed that security operatives had already arrested some suspects in connection with the crime and assured that those responsible for the abduction and killing would be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.
He described the late monarch as an accomplished elder statesman and courageous leader who dedicated his life to the service and development of his people.
The governor said the state government would work closely with security agencies to ensure justice is served, stressing that criminal elements would not be allowed to destabilise communities in the state.
While praying for the repose of the soul of the late traditional ruler, Nwifuru urged the immediate family and the entire Ikwo Noyo clan to remain strong and united in the face of the painful loss.
Responding on behalf of the family, the former Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe, expressed appreciation to the governor and security agencies for their efforts during the search for his abducted father.
Igwe said although the family was devastated by the tragic outcome, they remained grateful for the support and concern shown by the state government and well-wishers during the difficult period.
“Though our father is not here today to appreciate your efforts, his entire family will remain eternally grateful for the support and commitment shown during the search for him,” he said.
