A yet-to-be-identified motorist has left a trail of destruction and injuries in Abakaliki after a dramatic hit-and-run incident that resulted in multiple crashes across the city.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the driver, said to be operating a Sienna vehicle, first caused an accident along Water Works Road. Instead of stopping, he reportedly sped off, prompting a group of motorcyclists and commercial riders to give chase in an attempt to apprehend him.
As the pursuit intensified, the fleeing driver diverted onto Ojewere Street at a dangerously high speed.
In what witnesses described as a chaotic scene, he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a fully loaded commercial tricycle (popularly known as keke) along Gunning Road.
The force of the collision caused the tricycle to somersault, throwing passengers into the air and injuring pedestrians nearby.
Several victims sustained serious injuries, creating panic among residents and passersby.
Good Samaritans quickly mobilized to rescue the injured, who were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The condition of the victims remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
As of press time, the identity and whereabouts of the fleeing driver remained unknown.
Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the incident as residents called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further occurrences.
