The Acting Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Christy Uba on Tuesday urged the 2022 Batch 'C' Stream 'II' Corps Members to be working towards all-round development of the nation for the benefit of the citizenry throughout their service year.
Mrs Christy Uba gave the charge to the Corps members during their closing ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Old MacGregor College in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The NYSC DG represented by the State Coordinator, Mrs Bamai Mercy also urged the Corps members to avoid using social media for ethnic jingoism, rumour peddling and the promotion of hatred.
She recommended that the online activities of the Corps members "should be targeted at self-improvement as well as the promotion of the unity, peace and development of our dear country."
She advised them to avoid being speculative on issues affecting the NYSC, saying they should rather visit the website of the scheme, social media platforms and other official channels for clarifications.
The NYSC DG reiterated the Scheme's warning against unauthorized journeys and night trips, stressing that "travelling at night will not only increase the risk of accidents but also make rescue difficult."
She, therefore, advised the Corps members to always cut short their trips from six o’clock in the evening and pass the night at NYSC Lodges, military barracks and other locations officially designated for their safety.
"You should board vehicles only at approved motor parks to avoid falling into the hands of criminals," Uba added.
She appealed to the Corps employers to always accept Corps members posted to them, and make the necessary provisions for their welfare.
She equally urged employers to mentor the Corps members whom she described as 'young Nigerians' properly to enable them to develop their potential while calling on other stakeholders, including State and Local Government authorities as well as traditional rulers, to give the necessary encouragement to them.
She had earlier commended the Corps members' patriotic zeal as demonstrated by their active participation in the camp activities and exhibition of a high level of discipline during their orientation course in the camp.
The DG encouraged the Corps members to build on the skills acquired during the camp orientation course by availing themselves of opportunities for post-camp training, saying this will go a long way in empowering them for self-reliance.
